An SBA 7(a) loan or conventional term loan may be able to refinance business debt, including an MCA position, when the use is eligible and the complete file satisfies the lender's rules. The existence of an MCA does not make the refinance automatic. The lender still has to understand the original business purpose, current payoff, payment history, benefit of the refinance, and the business's ability to repay the new loan.
The questions a lender will ask
- Was the original advance used for a documented business purpose?
- Is the debt current, modified, disputed, or in default?
- What is the verified payoff and which positions will be paid?
- Does the new structure improve cash flow or otherwise provide a sound business benefit?
- Can historical and projected cash flow support the replacement payment?
- Are taxes, ownership, credit, collateral, and required documentation acceptable?
SBA eligibility and lender credit are separate
The SBA lists refinancing current business debt as a permitted 7(a) use. That does not mean every MCA payoff qualifies or that every participating lender will approve it. Program rules, lender policy, documentation, credit analysis, guarantor strength, and the facts of the existing debt all affect the answer.
| Route | What usually matters most |
|---|---|
| SBA 7(a) | Eligible use, documented benefit, complete historical financials, repayment ability, and SBA plus lender requirements |
| Conventional term loan | Stable earnings, leverage, banking conduct, credit, collateral where required, and lender appetite |
| Specialized MCA refinance | Verified positions, bank-statement cash flow, account conduct, payoff mechanics, and a workable replacement burden |
| Capital Readiness first | Unresolved losses, weak margins, tax issues, incomplete books, repeated overdrafts, or a structure that still does not cover |
Prepare a traceable use-of-proceeds file
Keep the original MCA agreement, proof of how the proceeds entered the account, invoices or records supporting the business use, payment history, and current payoff. If proceeds were mixed with transfers or used across several purposes, provide a clear reconciliation. The goal is not a perfect story. It is a record that a lender can follow from funding to use to proposed payoff.
Know when to pause the loan application
If the books do not reconcile, the proposed payment still produces negative cash flow, taxes are unresolved, or new positions continue to appear, another loan application may not be the best next action. A Capital Readiness plan can define the specific banking, margin, reporting, and debt milestones needed before resubmission.
Does SBA lend directly to pay off an MCA?
Borrowers generally work with participating lenders, and the lender evaluates the request under SBA and lender requirements. SBA's public 7(a) guidance lists refinancing current business debt as a permitted use.
Can a new term loan pay only some positions?
Possibly, but the remaining withdrawals must be disclosed and included in the post-closing cash-flow analysis. A partial payoff that leaves the business overburdened does not solve the file.
Are lender terms shown on this page?
No. Pricing, repayment, collateral, and conditions come from the actual approved proposal. QC's separate fee, if applicable, is disclosed independently.
