Interest-Only Business Line of Credit

Understand the breathing room. Plan for the principal.

An interest-only feature can change when principal is repaid. Explore how that feature interacts with revolving access, business cash flow, and the obligation that remains after the initial payment period.

Look beyond the initial payment

A payment feature is not a principal repayment plan.

An interest-only payment generally covers interest rather than reducing the borrowed principal. In a line-of-credit arrangement, the exact feature can depend on the draw, period, balance, and agreement. It may change near-term payment timing, but it does not remove the amount borrowed or guarantee continued access to funds.

The important comparison spans the entire obligation. What becomes due when the feature ends? Can principal be paid from normal collections, and is a larger later payment possible? Are there fees or restrictions on reducing the balance? A sound review considers these questions before treating a smaller initial payment as additional room to spend.

What matters in the review
01

Prepare for a collection event

Explore a defined gap before an expected business collection, with a plan for applying that cash to principal. Consider what happens if the timing or amount changes.

02

Support seasonal preparation

Compare an initial payment feature with the cash needed to stock up or mobilize before a busy period. Include the slower period and later principal obligations in the forecast.

03

Keep operating choices visible

Evaluate whether preserving near-term cash supports a productive use. Compare that benefit with interest, fees, remaining principal, and alternatives that reduce the balance earlier.

Illustrative planning scenario

Preparing before contracted work is collected

An illustrative planning scenario—not an actual customer result or financing offer.

The operating situation

A service business expects collections after completing scheduled work and needs supplies beforehand. It is considering a line with an interest-only feature during part of the borrowing period.

A useful way to approach it

The owner compares the initial payments with a principal-reducing alternative, then maps the expected collection to the amount still outstanding. A delayed-collection scenario is included before deciding.

Keep in view

The example assumes no approval or financing terms. If the expected cash is also needed for payroll or another obligation, it cannot safely be counted twice as the principal repayment source.

From a capital need to an informed decision

Make the next step a clear one.

A financing review should connect the business story to the numbers—and make the unresolved questions visible before a decision.

  1. 01

    Identify the exact feature

Check which balances qualify, when the interest-only period applies, how payments are calculated, and whether other fees or obligations are due during that period.

  2. 02

    Trace the principal obligation

Read what happens afterward: scheduled principal payments, a maturity payment, or another repayment requirement. Confirm dates and amounts in the proposed documents.

  3. 03

    Stress-test the transition

Compare normal collections with slower collections and higher expenses. Decide whether the business can manage the later obligation without assuming a refinance will be available.

A useful file tells the whole story

Prepare for a more productive review.

These are preparation topics, not a universal document checklist. Your secure room will show the specific questions, records, forms, and authorizations needed for the next step.

Start with a conversation

Cash-flow forecast

Prepare a view that extends beyond the initial payment period. Include the dates cash is expected and other uses competing for it.

Receivable support

Invoices, contract milestones, or customer-payment history may help explain the anticipated collection. Distinguish confirmed amounts from projections.

Debt and payment schedule

List all current obligations alongside the proposed structure so later principal payments can be viewed in the full business context.

Contingency plan

Explain how the business could respond to delayed collections. Preparation materials vary; this guide is not a mandatory or official document checklist.

Before you move forward

Good questions deserve clear answers.

Understand what a financing review can clarify, what still depends on the proposed terms, and what comes next.

Read our disclosures
Does interest-only mean the loan balance is shrinking?

Generally, interest-only payments do not reduce principal. Additional principal payments, fees, and the treatment of each draw depend on the agreement.

Is an interest-only feature always less expensive?

No. A smaller initial payment does not establish a lower total cost. Compare fees, time outstanding, principal repayment, and the full cost under realistic use of the facility.

What should I ask about the end of the period?

Ask what becomes due, how the later payment is calculated, whether principal amortizes or becomes payable at maturity, and what notice or reporting obligations apply.

Can I assume the balance will be refinanced later?

No. Future financing depends on circumstances and availability at that time. The repayment plan should not rely solely on a new approval that has not occurred.

Can I reduce principal during the feature period?

Review the proposed terms for voluntary payments, allocation rules, fees, and any effect on future availability. Do not assume every structure handles an additional payment the same way.
